Active School Print

St. Brigid's BNS prides itself on being an extremely active school and we are always striving to raise our standards and awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Partnerships

Our school works with local sports clubs to ensure the boys have an active and healthy lifestyle.

  • Our GAA Games Promotion Officer, Emmet from Raheny GAA coaches all classes during the year.
  • Boys from 1st class to 6th class attend swimming lessons in Westwood during the year
  • Clontarf Cricket Club provide coaches to introduce the sport of cricket to our school.
  • Dominick Smyth from Dublin Youth Ultimate Frisbee teaches frisbee to the boys during the year.

Below is a sample of our school's activities:

  • Additional Sports teams such as extra hurling and football teams to allow younger students to compete.
  • Outside coaches for GAA, Basketball, Cricket and other sports.
  • Active Schools week every year in June based around our Sports Day. The boys will experience a variety of activities and sports.
  • 10 @ 10 - once a month.
  • Pedometer Challenge/Run to Europe Challange
  • Ultimate Frisbee Coaching
  • Annual St. Patrick's Day céilí.
  • Extra resources purchased for PE and made available to all classes.
  • PE homework.
  • Healthy Eating Policy - Ms. Treanor coordinated the drawing up of a new healthy policy for the school including a new fruit break and a handout of information for parents.
  • Two defibrillators in PE hall and staffroom which are for use with any physical activity such as after school activities, games and PE. This was purchased thanks to money raised by the school’s Parents' Association and donation by the local Credit Union. Medical kits for school teams have also been kindly donated by the Parents' Association.

Physical Education

The importance of physical education in St. Brigid’s BNS is of paramount importance. All classes in the school are allocated one hour of PE a week along with numerous other opportunities to be physically active. The five different strands of Games, Athletics, Gymnastics, Aquatics, Dance and Outdoor and adventure activities are all taught in each class throughout the year.

Running initiative

As a whole school  we undertook a running programme called Run to Europe Challenge. This is an initiative in which all children in the school are encouraged to partake. The task is simple. The boys from each class must run, jog or walk laps of the school yard. For every lap one boy runs that represents one kilometre. The challenge is to run to the cities in Europe. Of course we are starting in Dublin with our first destination being London. It’s only 597 km. It’ll be interesting to see all the brilliant cities the boys will run to!

Here are some of the classes in the school "running to Europe". It was so much fun: Dublin stars Brian Fenton and Brian Howard joined a few of the classes running to Paris.
